An interview on healthy ageing with Tom Bones

From our Humans of Salveo Healthcare series

At Salveo Healthcare, we enjoy sharing the stories of the wonderful people in our community. Today, we’re talking with Tom Bones, 73, someone who shows us how to embrace healthy ageing and what it means to live well.

Early Life and Career

Tom spent his first 17 years growing up in the Huon and Derwent Valleys. He started working on the railway at just 15. Later, he worked for Australian Newsprint Mills and then spent 34 years in a variety of roles at EZ (Zinc Works) before he retired.

Big Moments in Life

A huge moment in Tom’s life was meeting his wife, Vicki. They started dating in 1970, got engaged the next year, and married in 1971. They raised three children together. Sadly, Vicki passed away five years ago, but Tom remembers their time together fondly. He is now a proud grandfather to eight grandkids.

Healthy Ageing

Tom keeps himself busy and active. He wakes up early, reads the news, does chores, and goes for walks. He eats a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and protein. Tom also likes working on projects, like detailing cars (and even a boat) and doing house repairs.

Tom takes care of his health by visiting his doctor, getting checkups, blood tests, and vaccinations, and taking vitamin D. He says, “Don’t be afraid to talk to people. Whatever it is, don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor.”

The Advanced Preventative Care (APC) Program has helped Tom with healthy ageing. His nurse cares about him as a whole person, not just his health numbers. He uses Clinitouch to monitor his health from home and is grateful for the support from his nurse, Casey.

For Tom, being healthy means staying active, eating well, looking after your mind as well as your body, and keeping in touch with family and friends.

A Good Life

Tom believes a good life is about love, family, and connections. “Every day I get out of bed, I try to be the best person possible.”

He enjoys time with his children and grandkids. Tom’s advice for healthy ageing: stay active, keep up with friends and family, and try to stay positive.

Tom enjoys time with family and also spends time out with friends, including monthly outings and trips he loves planning. “A life well-lived is what you make it. It’s about the people in your life.”

Getting Through Tough Times

Tom has had hard times, like losing his wife and brother. He copes by walking, staying busy, and helping others. He says, “If I can help somebody, I will.” He’s thankful for the support from his family and friends.

Final Thoughts

Tom’s story reminds us that everyday moments are what matter most. His journey shows the value of love, family, and staying connected. “Nobody’s perfect. We’re all a work in progress, aren’t we?”
