Autumn is here, and in this CEO update, we have lots of good news to share

Darren Mathewson, Chief Executive Officer

Governments across Australia are looking for solutions to reduce rising acute care (hospital) costs. Preventative health aimed at supporting people to stay well rather than only treating illness, needs priority.

The Tasmanian Government’s draft 20-year Preventative Health Strategy, The Health Revolution, is a positive first step. We now need a clear four-year action plan with simple, low-cost measures that can have real impact:

  • Make health prevention and wellbeing a whole of government issue;
  • Change the view that building more hospitals beds is the solution;
  • Use current structures in service delivery, better;
  • Invest in current programs and community organisations that are working;
  • Create an independent statutory body for preventative health and wellbeing.

At our headquarters, we are proud to display two beautiful artworks by Tasmanian Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Judith Rose Thomas. The paintings signal a welcoming environment for First Nations peoples, reminding us of connection to Country, community, and care, values that underpin our work and support for others.
